Sydney Smith, known as the “Giraffe Woman,” lives in Los Angeles, California. Believe it or not, she wanted to become famous for having a very long neck. To lower her shoulder, she was motivated by the Kayan people of Southeast Asia, who use brass coils to extend their necks.
Smith had a series of rings constructed and progressively added to it over five years. The stack had 15 rings in it and was five pounds heavy at its most challenging point. Her compulsion began at an early age and hasn’t abated. Children used to tease her as “Giraffe Neck” when she was younger, and that’s what she’s become proud of today.
Early Age Indicators of Her Giraffe Affection
When Smith was in middle school, she had the habit of falling asleep with pieces of coat hangers wrapped around her neck. She claims that her parents would only shake their heads and think their daughter was “crazy,” but in the end, her dogged determination paid out and she got what she wanted.
She claimed that the regular extending methods she used had contributed a few extra inches to the length of her neck. After several years, it became evident that her neck was taller than the other girls, but not in a hideously abnormal way. However, it took her some time to evaluate if that’s exactly what she wanted.
